After
qualifying from Edinburgh College of Art in 1973 with
a drawing and painting diploma, I realised that I wanted
to put this creative energy into a more practical form.
I was fortunate to spend two years apprenticed to a
fine cabinetmaker in Fife making copies of Georgian
furniture. From there I moved to join a craft cooperative
of wood workers in the Scottish borders. Here I developed
a more fluid style, while still being heavily influenced
by traditional methods.
On the break-up of the co-op in 1980, I moved to Fife,
where I developed a client base making kitchen and dinning
room furniture. In 1989, I took the chance of a space
at Gogar Cabinet Works, which has led to developing
my interest in designing living spaces as well as the
contents.
